Offline Translation on iPhone: Translate Without Internet

Offline translation means the language model runs on your iPhone instead of a server. You download a language once, and after that you can translate with mobile data switched off, in airplane mode, or in a basement metro station with no signal. Depending on the app, that covers typed text only, or speech and photos too.

It matters most in three situations: travelling without a roaming plan, places with poor coverage (mountains, islands, trains), and text you would rather keep on the device.

The trade-off is that offline models are smaller than online ones, so long or unusual sentences can come out more literal. For everyday phrases (directions, food, prices, transport, pharmacies) offline quality is usually more than enough.

The guides below cover which apps translate offline, how to prepare before you leave, and what to do when something doesn’t work.

A quick rule of thumb: download your languages on Wi-Fi the evening before you travel, then switch on airplane mode and translate a test sentence. If it works there, it will work on the mountain bus too. In AI Translator, subscribers can download offline language packs for 57 languages of typed text, and the free Phrase Book keeps its ready phrases on the phone, so both work with no signal at all.
